Courageous Manchester United Make Statement Performance in Blues Stalemate

The Red Devils delivered what many are calling a "defining" performance against defending title holders Chelsea, though they were feeling wanting for more than the solitary point secured from the match.

United managed to halt Chelsea's perfect start to the current season as their defender's superb strike equalized the Chelsea player's brilliant first goal.

This result marked a significant outcome for the Red Devils, who had before this lost in ten and tied just one of their prior eleven league meetings with Chelsea.

Yet, manager Marc Skinner voiced "frustration" that his team came away with only one point rather than maximum points as they extended their undefeated run to 5 games.

During the game, Ella Toone missed chances on both sides of the interval, while teammate Jess Park could have done better with a chipped effort before coming close with a dipping volley.

Former England midfielder Fara Williams commented: "In my opinion Manchester United will probably be kicking themselves. They generated numerous good chances and perhaps with improved composure in the final third, they would have come out on top."

However, Manchester United could have just as easily ended with nothing from the fixture.

Goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce made a superb second-half save to deny Chelsea's Keira Walsh, while both defenders Maya Le Tissier and Sandberg made crucial blocks during the final minutes to prevent the Blues from scoring.

Ex- England goalkeeper Rachel Brown-Finnis added: "United are the initial team to take points off Chelsea this season. If they need to issue a message to their own club and reaffirm what Manchester United's ambition is, they've earned every bit of that."

The major inquiry at the start of this season - the same one that's been posed over the last six WSL campaigns - is whether anyone can end Chelsea's dominance.

The Blues secured last term's trophy by remaining twenty-two games without defeat in Sonia Bompastor's first season at the helm - contributing to a three trophies as they won the Women's FA Cup and League Cup too.

Actually, it's been over five hundred days since Chelsea previously lost a league game - a 4-3 defeat at Liverpool on May 1st, 2024.

Manchester United narrowly missed to ending that streak on Friday night in a leading teams clash and Skinner was impressed of "an extremely brave performance" from his squad.

Skinner stated: "We're building. You can observe it, you can sense it. We are disappointed to have not won the game. The opportunities we created, few teams could create that against Chelsea. So for us to do that and in the way we accomplished it was praise to them [the players]."

After their promotion from the Women's Championship in the 2018-19 season, United have rapidly emerged as WSL title challengers, finishing just 2 points behind Chelsea in the 2022-23 season.

The following season they claimed the FA Cup - their first major women's honor.

While a tie against the present league frontrunners may be considered a chance not taken for United, former England striker the analyst believed it showed how far the team has come.

The pundit noted: "You have to look at that steady performance. They've played 11 times against Chelsea to date and only drawn one time, now the second time, so I think it's truly positive for their reliability and what they're achieving as a club and a team. It shows it's working and they're getting better."

Asked if Skinner deserved more recognition for United's ascent to challenge with more established clubs, the expert added: "What he's accomplished with these individuals, the philosophy, the DNA, how resolute they are. He hasn't got the amount of money or been able to spend the sum of money the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal or [Manchester] City have done."

What Will This Affect the Title Race?

The Blues' perfect beginning may have concluded, but they nonetheless remain top on thirteen points - 2 points ahead of United.

However Skinner said his team's performance at the Progress With Unity Stadium - where Chelsea secured last season's title - proved the Blues won't have it quite as easy this time around.

The manager added: "This proves to Chelsea they're not just going to walk the league. We need to ensure everyone is putting a challenge. I think the league is getting better and you saw the quality, that we are progressing too."

Blues manager Bompastor was "displeased" with Chelsea's performance, but stated a draw was "a decent result at Manchester United".

Questioned if United were title challengers, she responded: "There are many teams being genuine competition for us, every game presents a distinct challenge. You must be ready for each game."

City, who were defeated to Chelsea in the season opener, could close the gap on the leaders to one point if they beat Arsenal at home on Saturday.

Last season's second-place Arsenal, in the meantime, have ground to recover after dropping points against each of United and Aston Villa, and boss Renee Slegers will be eyeing the Gunners' home game against Chelsea on 8 November as a way to get themselves into contention.
